AMSHeR Press Conference at the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa [ICASA]

African Men for Sexual Health and Rights [AMSHeR] Press Conference – 17th Edition ICASA 2013

[Johannesburg] – The African Men for Sexual Health and Rights [AMSHeR] will be holding a press conference on Monday the 9th of December 2013 at 1500HRS, in the Press Conference room at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

AMSHeR’s press conference with the theme “Targeting ZERO” is being held to officially announce AMSHeR’s return to the International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa [ICASA] after  a very successful debut at the 16th edition of ICASA in Addis Ababa in 2011. As in 2011, AMSHeR returns with its 3rd Sexual Health and Rights Institute [SHRI] on the 4th and 5th of December 2013 as well as the Males who have Sex with Males [MSM] Preconference on the 6th of December 2013. Both these events are to be held at the Strand Towers Hotel in Cape Town, prior to the main ICASA conference from the 7th – 11th of December 2013. AMSHeR will also partake in a Human Rights March alongside various sub regional and regional partners as well as hold a Gala evening to launch its flagship documentary “The Voices for Freedom.” Both events to be held on the 10th of December 2013, the International Human Rights Day.

In line with our ICASA theme “Targeting ZERO” our line up of events and activities are aimed at addressing the vulnerability of gay and bisexual men, Male-to-female transgender women and other MSM, to HIV. Our one day training workshop, the SHRI will strengthen the capacity of AMSHeR member and affiliate organizations to deliver quality anal health services and advocate for STI, HIV, and sexual and reproductive programmes that are inclusive of anal health issues. Speakers include Dr. Kevin Rebe, a Cape Town based infectious disease physician working at Health4Men and Godwin Emmanuel, the Deputy Chief of Party for the Heartland Alliance in Nigeria, amongst others. The MSM Preconference which has once again been endorsed as an official sattelite event by ICASA, will build on its successes in 2011 when it became the first ever MSM focused conference to be held on African soil. The objective of our MSM Preconference will be to raise awareness on and bridge the knowledge gap about the health needs and other issues affecting men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender individuals in particular. Notable speakers include Michel Sidibe – UNAIDS Executive Director, Dr. Fareed Abdullah – South African National AIDS Commission and Imam Muhsin Hendricks amongst others. The outcomes of the SHRI and MSM Preconference events will be presented during our press conference.

During ICASA, AMSHeR will have an unprecedented presence with Kene C. Esom, our Director of Programmes as well as Cyriaque Ako, our Health Specialist  in Francophone Africa having been selected as plenary speakers at the conference. AMSHeR will also be exhibiting at the Networking Zone and Community Village spaces, where visitors can interact with AMSHeR secretariat and coalition member staff. Activities at these spaces will give vistiors both a broad and country specific understanding of the African LGBT landscape.
