AMSHeR names Dr. Olusegun Odumosu as its Executive Director.

JOHANNESBURG, May 13, 2019 – The African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHeR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Olusegun Odumosu as Executive Director following a competitive recruitment process and a unanimous decision of the AMSHeR Board of Directors.

‘Dr. Odumosu’s appointment signals an end to AMSHeR’s Executive Transition and the Board of Directors conveys its gratitude to all AMSHeR’s stakeholders in particular, members and funding partners for their unwavering support and commitment over the past year. The Board expresses its confidence in Dr. Odumosu to lead the Secretariat into its next stage of development in this our tenth year of existence. We look forward to supporting the secretariat through Dr. Odumosu in delivering on our common mandate bestowed on us by our membership;’ said Justice Monica Mbaru, AMSHeR Board Chairperson.

Dr. Odumosu is a medical practitioner and public health specialist with over 9 years’ experience of working with key populations on a wide array of programmatic areas that cuts across advocacy for policy implementation and change, access and uptake of HIV and other health services across Southern and West Africa amongst others. Prior to his foray in development work and public health, Olusegun practiced as a physician for over five years in the field of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Paediatrics. Dr. Odumosu has previously served in the capacity of AMSHeR’s acting Executive Director and Health and HIV Systems Strengthening Programme Manager.

Dr. Odumosu said, “It’s with a sense of humility and responsibility that I accept this appointment while remaining deeply aware of the challenges that our communities face across the continent and beyond. My pledge in this tenth year of AMSHeR’s founding, is to push for a unified voice across our coalition with members at the centre and full community representation in all our interventions. AMSHeR will undertake deliberate actions in pushing for the social and economic inclusion of our communities while remaining cognisant of the intersectional challenges that we face. I am grateful to the Board of Directors for expressing their confidence to the Secretariat through me and I will executive my role with passion, diligence and fairness.”

The AMSHeR Board of Directors assures all partners that AMSHeR continues to deliver on all of its commitments and adheres to the highest acceptable standards of professionalism.


AMSHeR is a Pan-African coalition of 18 MSM and LGBT-led organisations in 15 countries, working to promote non-discrimination, particularly based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) working to strengthen capacity, partnerships and collaborations amongst LGBT focused civil society organisations in Africa and to deepen alliances with other social movements that champion health, human rights, social justice and development.

AMSHeR advocates for protective policy and legal environment in hostile contexts at national, sub-regional and regional levels. This is done through the creation of space for community and civil society (CSO) participation in policy-related conversations, enabling access to resources and to decision-making spaces, capacity strengthening of various stakeholders to ensure duty-bearers understand and fulfil their duties and rights-holders to claim their rights.
