AMSHeR Appoints Berry Didier Nibogora as acting Executive Director

JOHANNESBURG, September 7, 2017 – The African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHeR) announces the appointment of Berry Didier Nibogora as acting Executive Director. Berry is currently AMSHeR’s Law and Human Rights Manager and has served AMSHeR in a number of critical roles since January 2013. His appointment follows the end of AMSHeR’s previous Executive Director, Kene Esom’s tenure.

Berry took office on September 1, 2017 following a full meeting of the Board held in Johannesburg, South Africa on August 26, 2017. He will lead and guide a competent team of managers in ensuring that AMSHeR’s work is delivered with the highest standards possible until the recruitment of a substantive Executive Director is concluded.

Berry stated,’On behalf of the Secretariat and the Board of Directors, I wish to thank the outgoing Executive Director for his unwavering commitment and dedication to AMSHeR and the broad social justice movement. Under his leadership, AMSHeR has gained its pride of place as a truly Pan African thought-leader. I would like to commit that in my acting role, I will ensure that the organisation identifies with the values of transparency, justification, professionalism, integrity and care. These values are important for the work that AMSHeR does and the ideals that we promote.’

As the AMSHeR Board of Directors conclude the recruitment process and addresses the transition, the Secretariat assures all stakeholders particularly, members and funding partners that AMSHeR continues to deliver on all of its commitments and adheres to the highest acceptable standards of professionalism.

AMSHeR is a Pan-African coalition of MSM and LGBT-led organisations, working to promote non-discrimination, particularly based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) and to advance access to quality health services for MSM/LGBT in Africa. As an advocacy and capacity strengthening organisation AMSHeR provides a platform for exchange and learning among MSM/LGBT community-based organisations, human rights and HIV service organisations, and other agencies working with and for MSM/LGBT organisations.

In addition to bringing about visibility and addressing human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) and barriers to access quality health services, AMSHeR advocates for increased resources, community leadership and strengthening of community structures and capacity to address these issues. AMSHeR and its membership engages in advocacy at national, continental and global levels on legal and policy reform human rights accountability and service delivery.
