AMSHeR @ the Regional Workshop on Preventive Security and Emergency Response for LGBT individuals and human rights defenders in Francophone West Africa.July 16, 2017
What? Regional Workshop on Preventive Security and Emergency Response for LGBT individuals and human rights defenders in Francophone West Africa. This is a follow-up initiative to the Francophone LGBTI Advocates Initiative [FLAI] Project.
Why? Francophone West Africa is a hostile environment for LGBT and social justice work due to criminalisation of same-sex behaviour and non-conforming gender identities. The rise of intorelance, extremism, religious fundamentalism and closing of civic space in the name of security and war on terror make timely than ever before a workshop that aims at:
(a) conducting a risk assessment and embarking on security planning for our communities; (b)identifying what crisis management systems or emergency response mechanisms exist in the region for experience sharing and improving preparedness;
(c) reflecting on and making inputs to the African Emergency Response and Contigency Mechanism initiated by AMSHeR.
